本剧以一个大家庭几代人的恩怨情仇，融合娘惹文化精髓，展现了新加坡的历史变迁。哑女菊香（欧萱饰）出生在一个新加坡土生华人大家庭，温柔漂亮更有一手好厨艺和女红，由于是姨太太所生而身份低贱。在日军南下前夕，她被安排嫁给一位富有峇峇当妾，却不甘命运安排而逃婚，巧遇一名日本青年摄影师，最终两人私定终身。战争爆发后，菊香夫妻不幸遇难身亡，留下孤苦伶仃的女儿月娘（欧萱饰）。
